<p>When automatically embroidering an area A0 within a complex boundary, problems arise if the direction of stitches within the area is such that any stitch line intersects the boundary at more than two points. This is overcome by dividing the area A0 into a plurality of sub-areas A1 and A2. The present invention replaces manual division by automatic division. TV camera (30, Fig 1) or image sensor (33) views a pattern which is displayed on CRT (35) and points Ti on the boundary are input using light pen (37). The boundary is rotated until the longest possible chord ToTn across the pattern is horizontal and then the points Ti are searched for local and global maxima and minima of x-coordinate, on the basis of which the boundary and hence the area are divided. The subareas can then be embroidered automatically in a conventional manner. <IMAGE></p> |
