A process for manufacturing a press platen that is heated by a fluid medium, said platen being of the kind or type used in platen presses in the production of chip-wood panels, fibre panels, laminate panels, and the like. A plurality of parallel heating channels are bored in one direction of a steel platen, and the heating channels are connected to collector channels and/or return channels extending transverse to said heating channels, this being done with regard to a predetermined flow pattern for the fluid medium. Deflecting components are installed in the return channels and plugs are inserted in the face ends of the heating channels. The return channels or the collector channels are drilled first. Cores are inserted into the return or the collector channels so as to produce the required fit. Then the heating channels are drilled, whereupon the cores inserted into the return or collector channels are drilled through. Next, the cores that have been so drilled are withdrawn and, when outside the steel platen, the cores associated with the return channel are fitted with deflecting elements and, optionally, with plugs. Finally, the cores, fitted with deflection elements and, optionally, with plugs are reinserted into the associated return channels. |
