<p>A multi-stage process for the retorting of solid, hydrocarbon-containing materials is provided. The solid, hydrocarbon-containing feed material is partially retorted in a dilute phase first fluidized retorting stage at first retorting stage conditions with a temperature elevated relative to ambient conditions and achieved by a method of admixing solid heat carrier containing an active cracking catalyst with the solid, hydrocarbon-containing material. The partially retorted product from the first stage is then substantially completely retorted in a second fluidized retorting stage at second stage retorting conditions, with the second stage retorting temperature being greater than the first stage retorting temperature. Vapor products are removed at intermediate stages so as to avoid undesired degradation.</p> |
