A charge of materials, esp. organic substances susceptible to local overheating during melting or dissolution processes which alter the aggregate condition, are maintained close to correct operating temp. in a microwave heater, with the reflective resonance chamber filled with inert gas, e.g. CO2 or N2. First stage produces homogeneous energy distribution, esp. affected by internal reflections from components, and is followed by a phase mixing stage. Gas may be injected vertically to produce a toroidal internal circulation. Automatic controls responsive to material movement ensure the microwave power supply is not switched on until adequate gas circulation is taking place. ADVANTAGE - Prevents undesired oxidn. or polymerisation changes which could spoil charge.
