Separator has an annular chamber between inenr and outer cylinders, the latter comprising vertical tubes in parallel for at least part of their length with upper ends bent inwardly to extend to the inner cylinder. Gases with entrained particulates are directed into the chamber for circular movement around it, with centrifugally separated material falling to the bottom and gases discharging upwardly. Steam and/or water is passed through the tubes to cool the outer cylinder. Part of the tubes are pref. bent out of the plane of the outer cylinder to form an inlet opening receiving the gases and directing them tangentially into the chamber. The inward parts of the tubes are pref. attached to and support the inner cylinder and form a roof over the chamber.
