Used breathing air is regenerated, with simultaneous prodn. of O2 by the combined effect of blue and green algae in hermetically sealed chambers. In one (or each) chamber the base area holds a mixt. of nutrient-enriched fresh and sea waters with metallic trace elements and mixed with other microorganisms to form a homogeneous fluidised bed. The consumed air is blown continuously or at controlled intervals into the mixed liq., which is stirred and maintained at optimum temp. At controlled intervals the liq. is irradiated with artificial light from different wavelength ranges combining to form artificial sunlight. O2-rich air collecting in the upper area of the chamber is fed to an air conditioner to be mixed with the general circulating atmos.. Pressure pulsations may be applied to the mixed nutrient soln.. USE - Esp. for submarines remaining submerged for long periods.
