762,029. Sheathing cables; corrugating. OSNABRUCKER KUPFERUND DRAHTWERK. June 9, 1954 [June 29, 1953], No. 16909/54. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Group V] In a method of corrugating a cable sheath 3, Fig. 4, the length of the troughs 7, Fig. 3, is so arranged that the increase in length resulting from the reduction in diameter is equal to the shortening in the crests 8 so that the sheath has no overall change in length. An extruded sheath 3 containing a core 4 and cooled by a spray 5 is fed over a large diameter draw-off drum 11 directly from the press 1 and passes to a corrugating tool 9 before winding on a drum 10. The corrugating tool 9 is longitudinally movable so that the differences in the corrugating and winding speeds may be taken up and means may be provided so that small movements of the tool 9 control the speeds. In an alternative arrangement the extruded cable may be coiled on a drum and subsequently corrugated. The sheathing may also be formed from sheet metal strips joined by welding &c. and may be of lead, aluminium, copper, titanium or their alloys or of steel or of plastic materials. |
