<p>PURPOSE: To obtain an individualized, twisted and curled, crosslinked fiber rich in fluid absorbing property and having a water retention value in a specific range by reacting a specific polycarboxylic crosslinking agent with a cellulosic fiber in the presence of an alkali metal hypophosphite-based catalyst to form intrafiber bonds. CONSTITUTION: A crosslinking agent solution is prepared from a crosslinking agent comprising a polycarboxylic acid selected from aliphatic and alicyclic 2-9C polycarboxylic acids having at least three carboxylic groups per olefinic saturated or unsaturated molecule or two carboxylic groups per molecule and having C=C bonds atα,β-positions of either one or both of the carboxyl groups, preferably citric acid or oxydisuccinic acid and an alkali metal hypophosphite- based catalyst. A cellulosic fiber is brought into contact with the above crosslinking agent so as to form intrafiber bonds to provide the objective crosslinked fiber having about 28-60, preferably 30-45 water retention values.</p> |
