The compacting appliance includes a wheel (1) supported by a lateral chassis (2), which chassis is articulated to a framework secured to the towing appliance. According to the invention, the wheel (1) is articulated to the chassis (2) by means of a rolling-contact bearing (7) of large diameter on the internal race of which drive takes place by means of a driving member (10). The driving member (10) is located distinctly above the axis of rotation (6) of the wheel (1). A vibrator (23) is positioned in the internal space (9) of the wheel (1), substantially in the centre. The compacting appliance is more particularly intended for refilling narrow trenches. <IMAGE>
