<p>A pressure sensor is described which uses a single mode optical waveguide such as a single mode optical fibre (11). Light is supplied to the fibre via a polarizer (12) and is received from the fibre either, after reflection, through the same polarizer, or in transmission via a second polarizer. The pressure to be measured exerts a force on the fibre solely at an acute angle, preferably 45°, to the axis of polarization. Alternatively, the pressure creates a stress within the fibre which is different at the acute angle to what it is at other angles.</p> |
