Prodn. of signs, esp. vehicle number plates, involves applying paint, pref. to the raised areas of embossed signs. The novelty is that a dispersion paint contg. a vinyl-acrylate ester copolymer binder (I) in aq. dispersion, is used. The paint is applied with rollers, pref. in several, esp. 3 or 4 coats. It is transferred to the application roller by a roller immersed in a tank of paint. The paint is pref. force-dried, without baking, with air or heat. The volatile components consist of 97-99% water, rest pref. higher alcohols and/or glycols and/or their derivs. As delivered, the paint contains 40-70 (55) pts. (I) in aq. dispersion; 6-15 (10.5) pts. coloured pigment in aq. phase, pref. aq. C black pigment; 10-21 (14.5) pts. filler, pref. based on BaSO4 and/or CaCO3 (pref. 3-6 (4.5) pts. inert filler, esp. based on BaSO4 and/or 5-15 (10) pts. other filler, esp. based on CaCO3); 0.22-3 (1.62) pts. wetting agent, pref. polyacrylate, AMP and/or polyphosphate (pref. 0.1-1 (0.55) pt. polyacrylate, 0.02-0.1 (0.06) pt. AMP and/or 0.03-0.1 (0.07) pt. polyphosphate); 0.1-0.2 (0.15) pt. preservative, pref. chloroacetamide; 0.1-1 (0.3) pt. antifoam, pref. based on mineral oil; and 1-4 (2-3) pts. solvent, pref. higher alcohols and/or glycols and/or their derivs. The solids content is ca. 50%, of which the binder and/or pigment and filler each comprise ca. 50%. USE/ADVANTAGE - The process is simple, economical and universally applicable. There is no significant odour or health hazard and no fire hazard.
