The invention relates to a device, the essential feature of which is an L-shaped turning bed (1) pierced with a T-shaped slot (2) providing for the displacement of the tool post (3) in all directions when working "in the air" on pieces, even of large diameter or ones which are off-centred. The turner is thus always facing the point of action of the tool, in direct view, because he can move around the turning bed. By virtue of its accessories, the lathe can be converted into a conventional lathe with a tail stock, and also pierces objects turned "in the air" or between centres.
