<p>A membrane of a poly (vinyl pyridine) crosslinked with an aliphatic polyhalide is suitable as the non-porous membrane in a peravaporation method for concentrating a charge aqueous solution of an organic oxygenate by passing the charge aqueous solution into contact with a first (high pressure) side of the non-porous membrane, a pressure drop being maintained across the membrane whereby at least a portion of water and a lesser portion of organic oxygenate from said charge aqueous solution pass by pervaporation through the membrane to a second (low pressure side) thereof, thereby providing a permeate on the low pressure side comprising a lean mixture containing more water and less organic oxygenate than are present in said charge aqueous solution, said lean mixture being recovered in vapor phase at a pressure below the vapor pressure thereof; and a retentate on the high pressure comprising a rich liquid containing less water and more organic oxygenate content than are present in said charge aqueous solution.</p> |
