A clamp for a battery 2 of secondary cells eg for vehicle starting or traction had a pair of pivoted clamp members 16 and 18 each supporting a battery connector 24, 26. Each clamp member 16, 18 is coupled to a piston 44, 46 of a double ended ram cylinder 48, to which fluid can be supplied under pressure from a master cylinder. The battery 2 is supported on a tray and the clamp mom born 16, 18 serve to restrain movement of the battery in normal use, and also to effect the electrical connections thereto.
