Invention relates to a flat seal which has at least one area or an orifice which contacts one or more different fluids. Damage to the seal in areas around the orifices is prevented by impregnating or coating the seal. Fluid resistant material may be a halogenated or fluorinated polymer. Areas in contact with water are coated or impregnated with a hydrophobic material, those in contact with oil are treated with an oleophobic material. Pref a cylinder head seal (10) consists of a soft material with cylinder edge seals (12,14) formed of metal. Orifices (16) are provided for the head clamping bolts and cooling water passes through the orifices (18). Sealing around the water channels is achieved by a hydrophobic material (20). Further orifices (22) in the seal (10) provide passage for motor oil between the cylinder and head blocks and the edges of the orifices (22) are impregnated with an oleophobic material to prevent oil ingress into the seal (10). Elastomer binder content of the oil and water resistant materials is less than 10%. USE/ADVANTAGE - Seal, which can be used as a cylinder head seal on engines, guarantees good sealing against different fluids in contact with or passing through orifices in it.
