An automatic exchange with distributed structure consists of stations each having a time-based connection network driven in phase with a time-frame generated by a local time base (BT) comprising a counter, which are linked together by high-capacity arteries (LHD) which are capable of transporting synchronous frames consisting of time-based channels. Each station comprises a time-based frame memory (MT) for the connection network, in which each time-based channel of a frame received by the station is stored in a position addressed on the basis of the information supplied by the counter of the local time base (BT), and by that supplied by a register (ND) in which the time offset is stored, modulo the length of the frame, between a time-based channel of fixed position of the received frame and the time-based channel of the same rank as the local frame, in such a way as to supply an offset vector which adds to the value of the local time base counter, making it possible to reread the frame received on the basis of the time base of the station. <IMAGE>
