The method controls the movement of a bracket (5) that carries the X-ray source above the patient (P), and the electronic image detector under the bed (B). The bracket is mounted on a rotatable column (c1), via three hinged elements (c2, c3, c4). each joint is adjusted by electric or hydraulic drive units (a1, a2, a3). When in use, the arm can be positioned anywhere inside an imaginary cylindrical envelope about the patient. The movement is limited to an inner envelope (6) which follows the outline of the patient's body.
