Before reaching a gripper providing engagement during a shearing process, the tapered end of a filled sausage is introduced into the centering grp. formed by shear-like engagement of a pair of centering blades. The blades, advanced pneumatically into contact, have oppositely directed and generally triangular indents between which the sausage end is inserted, and which during continued movement finally produce only the centering gap. During the movement, the blades also advance axially towards the sausage end, which is finally severed by a cutter blade approaching from the other side of the centering blades. ADVANTAGE - Reliable centering is independent of sausage shape and/or dimensional variations.
