PURPOSE:To obtain the subject compound in high purity by adding water or a lower alcohol or a mixture thereof into an organic solvent and carrying out debutylation of 3,3',5,5'-tetra-tert-bytyl-4,4'-dihydroxybiphenyl in the presence of an acid catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Debytylating reaction of 3,3',5,5'-tetra-tert-bytyl-4,4'- dihydroxybiphenyl which is a reaction in an organic solvent is carried out in the presence of an acid catalyst. In the process, water or a lower alcohol or a mixture thereof is added into a reaction solution to carry out the reaction. Thereby, high-purity 4,4'-dihydroxybiphenyl is economically obtained. Isobutane gas formed by the debutylating reaction can be separated to the outside of the system and the reaction can be completed under relatively mild conditions. Even if the reaction is carried out at high temperatures, a product with hardly any coloring is obtained. The resultant product is useful as a starting raw material for heat-resistant engineering plastics, etc.
