The cloning of delta<1>-dehydrogenase from Pseudomonas testosteroni, DNA segments comprising this gene, microorganisms transformed by the insertion of said segments and the use of said segments and microorganisms for producing delta<1>-dehydrogenase and for synthesizing and assaying steroidal substances, are described.
