The lubricating oil return from a cylinder head to sump uses a collector along the cylinder head, to which is connected a return line to the sump. The return line (15,19) is entirely outside the engine block with the collector (6) fitted to the outside of the cylinder head casing (1). It opens into part (15) of the return which is joined to the pump intake side (16,17). The pump is mounted to the end face (21) of the engine block (1), and part (19) of thereturn line runs back to the sump from the delivery side of the pump.
