<p>A yoke (10, 10', 10'', 10''' ) for supporting a magnetic recording core (12) adjacent a moving recording tape is disclosed. The core (12) has two major surfaces (16, 18), two side edges (20, 22), and upper (24) and lower (26) edges. Two wound wire coils (30, 32) are mounted to the core (12) adjacent respective side edges (20, 22) and extend beyond the major surfaces (16, 18). The yoke (10, 10', 10'', 10''') includes two opposed major surfaces (44, 46) and a front surface (36) which defines a bearing surface (48) for supporting the recording tape. A narrow slot (50) is formed in the front surface (36) to receive the core (12). The walls of the narrow slot (50) stabilize the core (12) along the length of the core (12) adjacent the core upper edge (24). Relief pockets (52, 54) extend between the two major surfaces (44, 46) of the yoke (10, 10', 10'', 10''') and encompass at least a portion of the narrow slot (50). The relief pockets (44, 46) permit winding the coils (30, 32) around the core (12) after the core (12) is positioned in the yoke (10, 10', 10'', 10'''). <IMAGE></p> |
