PURPOSE:To obtain sufficient light emission brightness by providing a timing adjusting means, switching a light emission voltage supply means and a nonemission voltage supply means, and setting a rate driving voltage sufficiently high. CONSTITUTION:An output data arithmetic circuit 3 sends light emission command signals 3a - 3g so as to display a desired character and they are supplied as signals 4a - 4g to a data selector 5 at the input timing of a permission signal 2d. The selector 5 outputs light emission pulse signals 2b or nonemission pulse signals 2c as signals 5a - 5g to a high-voltage output circuit 6B according to the level of the input signals. The circuit 6B applies the positive or negative light emission or nonemission pulse voltage to a driving electrode 12 according to the input signals. A common electrode which is connected electrically in one body opposite the electrode 12 is supplied with a common pulse voltage. Further, the electrode 12 is supplied with a light emission pulse which is opposite in phase from the common pulse voltage and delayed a constant time behind the voltage pulse to discharge an EL light emission layer Ca, and the supply of the light emission voltage and the supply of the nonemission voltage are switched by timing adjustment. Consequently, the rated driving a voltage is made sufficiently high and a high-brightness display is realized.
