A core (12) is inserted in a mould, creating a moulding space with the inner faces of the mould, and a material composed of inorganic particles precoated with a hardenable binder and/or mixed with a hardenable binder is introduced into the space thus created. After hardening of the said material, the core (12) is removed from the mould, having, on its outer surface, a layer (8) formed by the said material, the core (12) is inserted with the said layer (8) in the metallurgical container (1) and a pulverulent product which can sinter or agglomerate slightly and is resistant to the temperature prevailing during decantation of the liquid metal is introduced into the space (17) created between the outer surface of the said layer (8) and the inner faces (4, 5, 6) of the container (1); the core (12) is removed from the container (1), leaving in place the said layer (8). Used, in particular, for dry application to the inner faces of a metallurgical container of a protective coating including at least two layers, without immobilising the said container. <IMAGE>
