Sub-calibre under-water projectile fired from vertical holder - has full-calibre ribbed guide supported on transverse sabot

An underwater projectile (14) for firing vertically from the sea-bed etc. is mounted in a sub-calibre starter tube (12) and has its base enclosed by a transverse sabot (16) providing protection from propellant gases. Above the sabot, and with dimensions corresp. to the starter tube interior, the projectile rear carries an axial cylindrical guide (22) slidable along the projectile interior. The guide may have a number of regularly spaced ribs (48) which after firing separate from the projectile. ADVANTAGE - Modified length:dia. ratio improves flight stability.
