In a process for cutting off the fuel supply to a misfiring cylinder of an internal combustion engine, the misfiring can be detected by any desired method. After the fuel supply is cut off, any difference between the value of misfiring data and the value before shut off is determined. If no substantial change has occured, the fuel supply remains shut off. If, however, a substantial change has occurred, fuel is supplied to the corresponding cylinder until misfiring is detected in this cylinder. The advantage of this process is that the fuel supply can be shut off very quickly without tedious preliminary test, but at the same time this rapid decision can be reversed if it proves to be premature and incorrect.
