A laser device including a low divergence laser oscillator of the kind wherein an intra-cavity beam is propagated within an optical resonator along a resonator axis and within an oscillator portion of the volume of an active medium, and wherein a part of the intra-cavity beam intensity is coupled out of the oscillator by first outcoupling means as an extracavity beam, propagating along an optical path external to the optical resonator. The extra-cavity is reintroduced into the active medium as an expanded beam which undergoes amplification within tht active medium, and then is coupled out of the device as an output beam, The extent of beam expansion is pre-determined so as to render the cross-sectional area of the expanded beam substantially greater than that of the oscillator portion. |
