PURPOSE: To decompose an alkyl phosphate by hydrolyzing the alkyl phosphate through heat reaction with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide, and reacting its reaction product with hydrogen peroxide water in the presence of a transition metal catalyst. CONSTITUTION: A hydrolyzing process, in which an alkyl phosphate is heat reacted with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide in the absence or presence of a hydrophobic organic solvent, and a subsequent process in which a part or the entire amount of the reaction product of the hydrolyzing process is reacted with hydrogen peroxide water in the presence of an effective amount of a transition metal catalyst are included. In this case, the alkyl phosphate is tributyl phosphate and the alkali metal hydroxide is sodium hydroxide. The hydrolyzing process is effected at temperatures of 100 to 150 deg.C, and the mole ratio of the alkali metal hydroxide to the alkyl phosphate is in the range of 2:1 to 5:1. Also, the transition metal catalyst used in the subsequent process contains chromium, copper, vanadium, iron, or a mixture of two or more of them, preferably in the form of soluble metal salts, its amount with reference to metallic components being 0.15 to 5.0 parts by weight for 100 parts by weight of the alkyl phosphate. |
