The flat seal has openings through it. One opening encloses a soft ring packing which is fixed to the rim of the opening and contains embedded and/or vulcanised-in reinforcing ring. The reinforcing ring (5) radially projects beyond the outside circumference of the ring packing (6) and this radially proud parts has radial incisions (4) forming segments which are bent axially alternately. The reinforcing ring contour prior to assembly is larger than that of the opening (2) in the seal by an amount equal to the reduction of the ring contour as result of bending the segments. USE/ADVANTAGE - I.c. engines, cylinder head seals. Ring packing easily inserted using segments bent on reinforcing metal ring to provide radial fit in seal opening with correct orientation.
