An improved die member (50) and method of attaching a self-piercing and riveting fastener (20) to a panel (76) wherein a slug (90) pierced from the panel (76) by the riveting fastener (20) is securely staked in the tubular riveting portion (22) of the fastener during the installation of the fastener. The staking method includes shearing integral ribbons from the inside surface of the tubular barrel portion (22) as the barrel portion (22) is deformed radially outwardly in an annular die cavity (52) of the die member (50). The integral gibbons are then preferably deformed radially inwardly in semicircular staking cavities (80) defined through the free end of the central die post (58). In the most preferred method, radial tabs are simultaneously formed in the panel slug (90), which are deformed against an inside surface of the barrel portion (22), securely staking the slug (90) in the tubular barrel portion and preventing inadvertent removal of the slug.
