The present invention relates to traction locomotives capable of moving in a given direction, with electrical power take-off from an overhead contact line 3 using a pantograph, including a body 5 whose outer profile has, in a section perpendicular to the direction of motion, the shape of an inverted "U", and comprising a housing capable of containing at least part of the pantograph, means 10 for controlling the raising and lowering of the pantograph and motor drive means. The locomotive according to the invention is essentially characterised in that the pantograph 4 consists of a piece 11 of general inverted "U" shape, whose outer surface 12, defined in a plane perpendicular to the direction of motion, is of the same shape as that of the outer profile of the body 5, so that, when the piece is withdrawn into the housing, its outer surface 12 blocks the housing and defines, with the outer surface 6 of the body, a continuous surface, and in that the means 10 for controlling the raising and lowering of the pantograph are means for moving the "U" shaped piece in a plane perpendicular to the given direction.
