An electric cooking device comprises at least one electric hotplate which has a non-transparent cooking surface. A glass mounting plate which is provided under the hotplate has a partly transparent and partly non-transparent mask. An illuminating chamber illuminated by a lamp is positioned below the mounting plate with a light passage being provided in such a way that the mask gives way to a marginal area of the mounting plate surrounding the hotplate. Light thus shines through the marginal area to the outside to indicate the operating state of the hotplate. The mounting plate can also be made from a non-transparent material, such as sheet metal. In such a case, the light passes through a permeable seal or other transparent mounting components.
