PURPOSE: To remove hydrogen for a vacuum insulation jacket by making hydrogen flow from the vacuum jacket into an oxygen-containing container on account of the hydrogen pressure gradient and bringing the hydrogen into contact with a membrane catalyst of palladium or palladium alloy to generate water. CONSTITUTION: The membrane 13 of palladium or palladium alloy is exposed on its first side facing the interior of the container 11 to regions of relatively high oxygen pressure produced by the oxygen inside the container and of low hydrogen partial pressure. The membrane 13 of palladium or palladium alloy acts as a catalyst at the time of combination of hydrogen and oxygen to form water when hydrogen flows from the vacuum jacket into the container 11 following the hydrogen pressure gradient. The water thus formed in the container 11 is absorbed within the container 11 by a molecular sieve or other water absorber.
