SYSTEM CHARACTERIZATION METHOD

A method of evaluating the delays in processing information in a computer system comprising the steps of creating a model of the system, collecting statistics about the system and evaluating the model in terms of parameters derived from those statistics. In one embodiment of the invention a cluster of computers are evaluated in terms of the service times or delays for each component in the cluster. Statistical data from the operation of the cluster is transformed into a number of essential parameters which are then used to evaluate a queueing theory model of the cluster to determine the service times.
