The pick-up mechanism incorporates a programmed pressure-producer (12) reducing the pressure on the top surface of the stack of sheets or booklets. Two horizontal, parallel tines (101, 102) have a counter-piece (103) at right angles to them. A holding-down device (123) with pressure surface is positioned near the counter-piece (103) on the side of the counter piece (103) facing away from the pick-up device (121, 125). USE/ADVANTAGE - The automatic handling machine is for a stack of flexible sheets or booklets and prevents the base surface of the stack from being damaged.
