In a process for hydrogenating a carbonaceous material, in particular coal and/or heavy oil, by reaction with hydrogen at elevated pressure and temperature in a reactor system, the case-hardened product is pumped under pressure into the upper region of the reactor system, where it passes from top to bottom first through a heating or pre-reaction zone and then through a main reaction zone, while the hydrogen required passes through the reactor system in countercurrent from bottom to top. The hydrated product is withdrawn at the top of the reactor system and the residue at the bottom. Part of the contents of the reactor flowing downward through the reactor system is continuously removed from the main reaction zone and recycled to the heating or pre-reaction zone. The reactor contents are recycled by means of an agitator provided for that purpose. The pressurized material is divided in function of the reference temperature into two partial flows, one of which is introduced into the heating zone and the other into the main reaction zone.
