Phenol and hydrogen chloride are removed from mixtures of vapours obtained in known manner by passing chlorobenzene vapour and steam over a contact at raised temperature without causing any substantial condensation of the remainder of the mixture by known general means for removing constituents from gases. Suitable means are to combine the phenol and hydrogen chloride with a basic substance such as lime, caustic soda or ammonia or wash out with water. The lime may be used as slaked lime or milk of lime, the caustic soda as an aqueous solution or the ammonia as a gas. The process may be worked as a continuous process.
