Drive system for vehicle IC engine - switches to charging mode by closing isolating coupling to connect compressor at point depending on rate of change of accelerator pedal

The drive system has a compressor (15) driven via a speed varying device (7) and an isolating coupling (11). The compressor is switched over to charging mode when the accelarator pedal (24) reaches a changeover setting (V). Changeover is achieved by closing the isolating coupling so that the compressor is switched in. The changeover setting depends on the rate of change of the accelerator. The isolating coupling is not closed but opened if the throttle flaps angle of opening and the speed of the accelerator or its rate of change of speed lie below given limits. The isolating coupling is opened when the throttle flaps opening angle is 90 percent of its maximum. An electronic circuit is used to control the flap and the coupling and includes an EEPROM memory. ADVANTAGE - No delay in accelerating vehicle.
