A hat-shaped profile is produced by folding a metal strip by a multi-part press tool. The lower part of the tool has a central punch (5) with a sliding inner punch (13). The upper surface of the inner punch is aligned with the upper surfaces of the blank supports (8) at the beginning of the working stroke. - Jaws (10) fitted to the inner edges of the blank supports bend the edges of the strip at right angles. As the upper tool descends, the jaws (6) of the upper tool press the blank downwards and form the main part of the hat-shaped profile. The channel section flanges of the hat profile are formed between the upper tool and the jaws (9) arranged on each side of the central punch.
