In a process for distributing packets or the like according to the addresses, labels or the like affixed to their surface, using a separating and conveying device, all surface sections of each previously isolated packet are scanned optically along a conveying section and images of the surface sections are obtained for each packet. For the purpose of further evaluation, the images are represented simultaneously or approximately simultaneously, one or more images for each packet are selected, and each selected image is associated with an item of sorting information for the distribution of the corresponding packet.
