23443-443 A process for the preparation of a thermoplastically processable aromatic polyamide is disclosed. The polyamide is prepared by polycondensation of the following monomers: HOOC-Ar-COOH and H2N-Ar'-NH2 wherein Ar is, for example, 1,3- or 1,4-phenylene and Ar' is wherein X is -SO2- or -CO- and Y is -O- or -S-, in the presence of 0.01 to 2.0 mol % of an alkyl- or aryl-phosphonic acid, -phosphonous acid or -phosphinic acid or of one of the esters or halides thereof. The aromatic polyamides so prepared have improved stability towards thermooxidation and are useful as components of moulding compositions which are processed at high temperatures in the presence of atmospheric oxygen.
