These pigments are used in ceramic technology as colouring agents for ceramic masses, glazes, glass and similar. They are synthesised using sol-gel technology at reduced temperatures. The bulk of zirconium phase is synthesised over the temperature range 800 - 1100 degrees C. This enhances the intensity and purity of the colour. The pigment preparation method is based on adding 60-65.5 % by mass (expressed as zirconium oxide) of zirconium nitrate solution and a solution of one of the salts carrying the chromoform ions - iron chloride hexahydrate, manganese chloride hexahydrate, ammonium chromate, cobaltous nitrate hexahydrate, ammonium metavanadate or nickel chloride hexahydrate - in quantities ranging between 5.2 - 7.0 % by mass, expressed as their respective oxides, to the silica sol.
