The lock comprises a housing (1) with a latch bolt (2) movable along an axis between retracted and protruding positions relative to the housing and with two-operation axes (3', 3'') positioned symmetrically on opposite sides of the bolt axis and with means for transmitting a bolt-moving force from a lock operating device, e.g. a handle positioned on axis (3') and for accomplishing dead locking of the bolt in its protruding position from axis (3'') e.g. by means of a turn knob or a key. These means includes two guiding elements (12', 12'') turnably supported in housing (1) on opposite sides of the bolt axis, each operation axis being surrounded by a force transmission unit (4', 4''), each of which comprises first and second cam elements (5, 6) independently turnable one relative to the other, each first cam element (6', 6'') being provided with follower (10', 10'') which is arranged to turn the respective guiding element for retracting the bolt into the housing, and each second cam element (5', 5'') being provided with a dead locking cam (7', 7'' which is turnable into a position close to protrusion (15', 15'') to prevent turning of the respective guiding element and, hence prevent retraction of the bolt. The bolt (2) has on a shaft member (2a) an element (17) with flange members (17a, 17b) the bolt (2) can be pulled from housing (1) against a spring (18) and turned through 180 DEG .
