A fire-retardant polyester is produced by esterifying or ester- exchanging oxyalkyleneglycolphosphate cpd. of formula (I) to obtain a polyester precursor of 2-10 polymerization degree, and polycondensing the precursor with a proper amount of phosphorus in the presence of a catalyst. In (I), M is alkali metal or ammonium salt; x and y are each 0-5; R is C1-5 alkyl, aryl, cycloalkyl, haloalkyl, haloaryl or halocycloalkyl. The content of phosphorus in the final polymer is pref. 0.4-1.5 wt.%, and the catalyst is pref. antimony cpd. or germanium cpd. The polyester has a good colour and transparency.
