The cylinder lock (1) has a cylinder (6) which can be rotated in its housing (3) when the key (2) has been inserted and has brought the locking pins (5, 15) to their lock release positions. In addition to the usual row of vertical locking pins, the lock has a row of horizontal locking pins (20) and two locking balls (37). These horizontal locking pins (20) have domed heads (21) which enable them to be pushed radially inwards as soon as the cylinder begins to be rotated by the key (2). The key (2) is provided with recesses (33, 39) on its side faces to receive the inner ends of the horizontal locking pins (20) and the balls (37) and so allow the cylinder (6) to be fully rotated.
