The direction and speed of interference patterns produced by oppositely circulating light beams indicate the gyro rotation direction and speed. The patterns are detected by two photodiodes feeding measurement signals to an evaluation circuit. The circuit counts null crossings of at least one signal to determine the rotation angle during the measurement period. It measures the amplitude of at least one signal at the end of the period to determine the rate using the measured angle and duration.
