The present invention pertains to novel solid solutions involving V2O3, ZrO2 and TiO2 and the method for their preparation. The compositions involving V2O3, ZrO2 and TiO2 fall within the shaded area of a polygon in a ternary composition diagram of V2O3, ZrO2 and TiO2 as shown in the drawing herein e.g., FIG. 1. These materials may be used as an oxidation catalyst or in the manufacture of high temperature refractories.
