Flow meters for measuring direction and velocity of flowing liquid comprise a measuring probe 11 equipped with symmetrically and peripherally placed light sources 111-219, light receptors 112-220 and a float 117 which is repeatedly moved by the liquid from the centre of the probe 11 to its periphery. A processing unit is arranged to illuminate the light sources 111-219 one at a time in a set order, to record the light from the light source 111 illuminated at various times which is received by the light receptors 112-220 at corresponding times, and to calculate the direction of movement and velocity of the float 117 based on the recorded light. The probe 11 has a device 118 for repeatedly centring the float 117 in the centre of the probe.
