摘要 <PICT:0875176/IV (a)/1> <PICT:0875176/IV (a)/2> <PICT:0875176/IV (a)/3> The edges of two strips of sheet material, e.g. short lengths of selfadhesive, rubberized bias-cut tyre fabric, are butt spliced by clamping both edges along spaced segments and bringing the two edges forcibly together with the clamped segments of one edge engaging the unclamped segments of the other edge. As shown, Fig. 1, a length of rubberized fabric M is spliced to a preceding length M1, the continuous web formed by succesive splicings being wound up on to a reel 34. Length M is fed by conveyer belts 24, and clamping heads 50, 51 for the edges to be spliced are angularly adjustable on a box frame 20. Head 50 comprises jaws 73, 77, Fig. 7, recessed as shown and adapted to grip material M at areas 78 of teeth 190, 192. A locating member 85 can be swung up from the horizontal so that spaced fingers 86 enter between the teeth 190, 192 to press the edge of material M back to a reference line 197 (Fig. 15). Head 51 comprises jaws 132, 134, Fig. 10, toothed complementarily to jaws 73, 77. A locating member 145, Fig. 10, for pressing the edge of material M forward to a reference line 197a (Fig. 15) is advanced and retracted by operation of toothed segments 155 and racks 156. Head 50 can be moved towards head 51 so that the teeth intermesh, the teeth being so shaped that when in contact reference lines 197, 197a are in alignment. Operative cycle. (1) Belts 24 are run at <PICT:0875176/IV (a)/4> high speed to deliver length M to head 50, and reel 34 is run at high speed to wind up length M1; (2) as the leading edge of length M approaches head 50, a switch slows the drive to belts 24; (3) as the trailing edge of length M1 approaches head 51, reel 34 is driven at low speed and locating member 85 is swung to a vertical position; (4) as the leading edge of length M emerges between jaws 73, 77, belts 24 are stopped with the leading edge located ahead of line 197; (5) reel 34 is stopped when the trailing edge of length M1 is behind line 197a, member 85 is moved to push the edge of length M back to line 197 and member 145 is lowered to push the edge of length M1 forward to line 197a; (6) after a timed delay, both pairs of jaws close; (7) member 85 is lowered and member 145 is retracted; (8) head 50 is moved towards head 51 so that the jaw pairs inter-engage and the edges of lengths M, M1, which are self-adhesive, are butt spliced; (9) the jaws are opened, the heads separated and belts 24 and reel 34 are again run at high speed. The cycle is then repeated. Photo-cells and limit switches are employed to control the various steps. Movements of the jaws, head 50 and members 85, 145 are effected by fluid-operated cylinders.
