The present invention relates to chromatography, and provides in a chromatography column new end fittings and an insert 114. Each end fitting is a plastics plug 74 which is screwed to the end of the column tube 32, and inside the end fitting is a shoulder 115 which is engaged by the insert 114. The insert fits neatly into the column tube so that it can be used to press against the column packing. The insert also embodies a cavity 108 for a frit 36. The end of the insert 114 which projects into the column and seats against the column packing, has a skirt 112 which is flared so that the pressure inside the column will spread the skirt which is of flexible plastics material into sealing contact with the column inner wall forming an effective seal. The insert may be in one piece plastics material component, or it may be in two pieces (Fig. 9A not shown), a plastic piece embodying the skirt and stainless steel piece has the portion which engages the shoulder. Passage 116 through the insert allows eluant supply pipe 16(18) to reach the top of the column, eliminating the ferrule depth. Voids in the column may be reduced by adjustment of the degree of penetration of the insert into the column. <IMAGE> |
